AST RESEARCH, INC. TECHNICAL BULLETIN # 1592 10/01/96

TITLE: Windows 95 Disabling Integrated Devices

ISSUE

The resources used by these devices may cause a conflict.

Examples include, but are not limited to:

   1. Adding an internal modem may conflict with an
      integrated COM port.

   2. Adding a joystick may conflict with an integrated
      sound chip.

   3. Adding an add-in hard drive controller may conflict
with the integrated hard drive controller.

BACKGROUND

Windows 95 is a Plug-and-Play Operating System. When a system
boots up using the Windows 95 operating system, the Plug-and-Play
   BIOS detects the system hardware.

ACTION

Use the Windows 95 Device Manager to DISABLE the device.
To do this, follow the steps below:

   1. Double-click the system icon in the control panel.

   2. Select the Device Manager.

   3. Double-click on the device you wish to disable.

   4. Uncheck the 'current configuration' box and choose
'OK'. This should place a red 'X' on the associated
      device.

   5. After restarting Windows 95, the resources will be
free for use by other devices.
