TITLE: Network Boot Disk for Mobile Systems

SUMMARY

   Many system administrators need to load hard disk drives on
   mobile systems over a network connection. This bulletin will help
   you create a network access boot disk for the system on which
   point enablers do not function.

   This issue applies to Ascentia A+, Ascentia M, and Ascentia
   P70/P80 systems.

NOTES

   Most DOS PC Card point enablers may not function on mobile
   systems with Cardbus controllers. On these systems, Card Services
   must be loaded before the PC Card slot will function properly.

   AST ships Phoenix CardManager for DOS/Windows 3.1x in the systems
   mentioned above.

   To create a network access boot disk with Phoenix CardManager
   files, follow the steps below.

   1. Set the Plug-and-Play (PnP) option in CMOS
      to DISABLED on Ascentia A+ and Ascentia P70/P80
      systems.

      Set the Plug-and-Play (PnP) option in CMOS
      to ENABLED on Ascentia M systems.

   2. If installing multiple systems, select one and install
      DOS 6.x and Windows 3.1x.

   3. Install Phoenix CardManager. This program is located
      on the Hard Disk Restore CD provided by AST.

   4. Install the network client files and drivers for your
      network PC Card, and make sure it is working before
      proceeding.

   5. Make a bootable disk by inserting a diskette in the
      floppy drive, and running the following command:

              FORMAT A:/U/S

   6. Copy C:DOS\HIMEM.SYS and C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE to A:

   7. Copy the following files from C:\PCM4\Program\ to A:

               CNFIGNAM.EXE
               DPMS.EXE
               PCM.INI
               PCMCS95.EXE
               PCMSCD.EXE
               PCMSS.EXE

      The files listed above, along with the boot files,
      will consume about 430KB of space on the disk.

   8. Using a text editor, create a CONFIG.SYS file on the
      disk. The CONFIG.SYS file should contain the following
      lines:

               LASTDRIVE=Z
               DEVICE=A:\HIMEM.SYS
               DEVICE=A:\EMM386.EXE NOEMS (Add any
               exclusions necessary for your PC card)
               DOS=HIGH,UMB
               DEVICEHIGH=A:\IFSHLP.SYS (only needed for
               Microsoft client)
               DEVICEA:\DPMS.EXE
               DEVICEHIGH=A:\CNFIGNAM.EXE /DEFAULT
               DEVICEHIGH=A:\PCMSS.EXE
               DEVICEHIGH=A:\PCMCS95.EXE
               DEVICEHIGH=A:\PCMSCD.EXE
               SET PCMPLUS=A:\

   9. If you are connecting to a NetWare network, copy the
      following files to the floppy:

               LSL.COM
               The card's ODI driver
               IPXODI.COM
               All necessary .VLM files
               NET.CFG (modified appropriately)

   10. If you are using the DOS Client for Microsoft
       Networks, you will need to copy some or all of the
       following files to the floppy:

               CONNECT.DAT
               IFSHLP.SYS
               NDISHLP.SYS
               NET.EXE
               NET.MSG
               NETWORK.ING
               PROTMAN.DOS
               PROTMAN.EXE
               PROTOCOL.INI
               SETUP.INF
               SYSTEM.INI
               WCSETUP.INF
               WFWSYS.CFG

   11. You must also copy the card's driver files. For
       example, the 3Com 3C589D card will require ELPC3.DOS
       and one or more of the OEM .INF files.

   12. If you are using the NWLINK protocol, copy file
       NWLINK.EXE to the floppy.

   13. Modify any lines in the SYSTEM.INI and PROTOCOL.INI
       files so they point to the appropriate files on the
       floppy disk.
