Data Communications Software

Computers need data communications software to operate a modem; that is,
to send data entered from the keyboard to the modem and to display the
data received by the modem to the computer monitor. Most communications
software goes well beyond this point. For example, software with "file
transfer" capability is capable of sending a file from your computer to
another computer.

External modems generally DO NOT come with software, since they can be
used with virtually any computer or terminal and software must be computer
specific. Since this modem is fully compatible with the Hayes AT command
set, S Registers, and dialing commands, for normal communications you can
use it with virtually any communications software written for your
computer.

However, to work with V.42bis and MNP5, the software MUST support hardware
and software flow control (for terminal mode software flow control is
sufficient, but for file transfer you need hardware flow control). While
not intended to be comprehensive, we have compiled the following list of
communications software packages that support hardware and software flow
control:

    Bitcom Deluxe ProComm Plus

Fax Software

The fax capability of the faxmodem REQUIRES software control.

In most cases, fax software that will ensure proper operation of the
faxmodem's fax features for a specific computer (for example, an IBM PC
compatible or a Mac) is included with the faxmodem. If fax software is
not included, fax software may not be available for your computer or
network, and therefore you may not be able to use the faxmodem's fax
capability.

In general, for fax software to work with the faxmodem it must support the
TR.29 fax standard. Some of the best known compatible packages include
the following:

PC COMPATIBLE FAX SOFTWARE

    Bitfax

    Bitfax for Windows

    MTEZ with Express Fax

    Quick Link II Fax (PC)

Winfax (for use with Windows only)

MACINTOSH COMPATIBLE FAX SOFTWARE

    BackFax

    Quick Link II Fax (Macintosh)
