Overview of StormWindows

StormWindows is a security utility that allows the administrator to add
several types and degrees of protection to the desktop and system of a
Windows 98 computer. Intelligent use of StormWindows security measures
will allow for the controlled use of any shared Windows 98 computer.

Installing StormWindows

StormWindows should be installed through Control Panel (Add/Remove
Programs icon). This will properly install the StormWindows files and
icons for access.

PLEASE NOTE: It is NOT possible to use StormWindows without properly
installing it. Also, it is NOT possible to simply copy StormWindows
files from one computer to another.

The initial StormWindows password upon installation is "xxxx" (NOT
case-sensitive). You MUST change this to a private password of your own
choice (4 to 20 characters) as soon as possible.

Uninstalling StormWindows

StormWindows should be UNinstalled through Control Panel (Add/Remove
Programs icon) . This will remove the StormWindows files and the changes
that the Setup program made to your system files.

Note, however, that any uninstallation may NOT be able to undo all of
the changes that YOU yourself may have made to your PC by the use of
StormWindows AFTER it was installed, so please DO remember that YOU must
undo ALL protections BEFORE you proceed to uninstall StormWindows.

Access to StormWindows

StormWindows may be accessed by clicking on its icon on the Start Menu,
or by double-clicking on its icon on the desktop.

StormWindows may also be accessed through the Start Menu by entering
"STORMWIN" (not case-sensitive) on the Command Line in the Run Command
dialog box, or by searching for "STORMWIN.EXE" (also not case-sensitive)
in the Find Command dialog box.

The initial StormWindows password upon installation is "xxxx" (NOT
case-sensitive). You MUST change this to a private password of your own
choice (4 to 20 characters) as soon as possible.

NOTE that you MUST remember the password, as you will ABSOLUTELY NOT be
able to start StormWindows without it. NOTE that, if YOU forget the
StormWindows password, Cetus Software will NOT be able to help you. You
MUST remember the StormWindows password. This is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT.

CAUTION: It is very important that you do not remove any means of access
to StormWindows without very careful thought. Since StormWindows is
password-protected, there is no reason to "hide" it from users, and you
must be able to access StormWindows easily in order to change security
settings. This is very important. It is highly recommended that you
maintain at least TWO means of access to StormWindows at all times.

Using On-Line Help

You may move from one topic to another in the on-line Help file by
clicking with the mouse on any underlined "jump" item. From the
keyboard, you may use the Tab key to highlight any item, and then press
Enter. You may also learn more about how to use a Windows Help file by
pressing either the F1 key or the "Help" button above (or you may use
Alt-H from the keyboard).

Security Strategy

It should be obvious that the use of just any one security measure is
not likely to provide much actual security in any particular setting,
and that a carefully chosen combination of complementary security
measures will be required for most circumstances.

It should also be clear that it would be almost impossible for Cetus
Software to provide one single set of recommendations that could provide
optimum security under all circumstances. Each situation is different,
and each therefore requires its own individual security plan.
Nonetheless, Cetus Software does recommend that the following measures
be considered when planning any effective security strategy:

Cetus Software recommends that serious thought be given to removing
access to Windows 98 Explorer. A guest user with even moderate Windows
savvy will know how to get past many security measures simply by using
this tool to "explore". Cetus Software does recommend disabling ALL
means of access to Explorer (which is still available to the
administrator through StormWindows, of course), though it is clear that
it will not always be possible to do this in every situation.

Cetus Scout is a free Explorer-like program available on the Cetus Web
site, provided at no cost to registered users of StormWindows who may
wish to provide limited access to files, after preventing Explorer from
running with StormWindows.

With Cetus Scout, users can run executable files, and open data files
associated with programs. However, files and directories may not be
created, deleted, copied, moved, or renamed. Scout will show only the
drives allowed to be visible by StormWindows. Scout, therefore, offers a
more secure file browser for StormWindows-protected PC's.

To install Cetus Scout after downloading, copy Scout.exe to the any
directory, and then create a shortcut to Scout.exe on the Desktop or on
the Start Menu, for easy access to it. NOTE: Cetus Scout may be used
ONLY on a PC with a registered copy of StormWindows installed on it.

Cetus Software STRONGLY recommends the use of the three Registry
Security settings on the StormWindows System page. Activating the
settings for No Registry Editor, No System Policy Editor, and No
Registry Merging will prevent a guest user from attempting to circumvent
StormWindows protections.

Cetus Software also recommends the use of a well chosen password, one
that could NEVER be guessed by any guest user, one that employs an
uncommon combination of letters, numbers, and punctuation. Avoid the use
of institutional names, first names, last names, nicknames, names of
spouses, names of children, names of pets, birthdates, or any other
simple password that would be likely be tried by any "adventurous" guest
user. Unfortunately, any password that is very easily remembered is
probably also a password that is easily guessed.

Main Commands

StormWindows, to the right of the individual property pages in its main
window, provides command buttons for several functions that affect
StormWindows and/or Windows itself.

Commands for Windows

Since many protection changes provided by StormWindows require Windows
to be restarted before they take effect, StormWindows provides for both
restarting of Windows and shutting down the computer (for later
restart); this shutdown access is also useful if you wish to use the
StormWindows No Shutdown Command setting.

RESTART WINDOWS will exit StormWindows and restart Windows, so that any
StormWindows changes made may take full effect immediately. CAUTION: Any
changes made since starting StormWindows WILL be saved. (If you wish to
cancel any changes made, you must do so individually before exiting
StormWindows and restarting Windows.)

SHUT DOWN COMPUTER will exit StormWindows and shut down the computer, so
that any StormWindows changes made may take effect the next time Windows
is run. CAUTION: Any changes made since starting StormWindows WILL be
saved. (If you wish to cancel any changes made, you must do so
individually before exiting StormWindows and restarting the computer.)

Commands for StormWindows

ABOUT STORMWINDOWS will display information about StormWindows (version
number and copyright) and Cetus Software (postal, email, and Web site
addresses, and telephone and fax numbers).

STORMWINDOWS HELP will access StormWindows on-line Help.

IMPORT SETTINGS may be used to import all checkbox (only) security
settings from a diskette in Drive A:, or from any other location chosen
by the user, allowing the authorized user to synchronize checkbox
settings on several computers automatically. (Note that the Programs
Page listbox contents are NOT imported.)

EXPORT SETTINGS may be used to export all checkbox (only) security
settings to a diskette in Drive A:, or to any other location chosen by
the user, allowing the authorized user to easily transport a protection
scheme to other computers. (Note that the Programs Page listbox contents
are NOT exported.)

UNPROTECT NOW may be used to temporarily and quickly remove all checkbox
(only) protection settings, for installing software, modifying the
desktop configuration, etc. (Note that the Programs Page listbox
contents are NOT affected by this command.)

REPROTECT NOW may be used to restore all previous checkbox (only)
protection settings in place at the time the Unprotect Now function was
used. (Note that the Programs Page listbox contents are NOT affected by
this command.)

EXIT STORMWINDOWS will exit from StormWindows. CAUTION: Any changes made
since starting StormWindows WILL be saved. (If you wish to cancel any
changes made, you must do so individually before exiting StormWindows.)

NOTE - The Import, Export, Unprotect Now, and Reprotect Now functions do
NOT affect, NOR are affected by, the contents of the various listboxes
on the Programs Page. (These functions only involve the checkbox
settings on all the other pages.)

Desktop Page

StormWindows, in its Desktop page, allows you to restrict access to many
Windows 98 desktop features and commands.

CAUTION: Many of these restrictions can be dangerous if not used with
care. Consider carefully the impact of each of these desktop
restrictions before invoking it. Do not remove any means of access to
StormWindows without first making certain that you still have other ways
of starting StormWindows. This is important.

Shell Restrictions

NO FUNCTION KEYS AT STARTUP will prevent the F4, F5, F6, and F8 keys
from being used while the computer is being started. CAUTION: Do NOT use
this setting UNLESS you are CERTAIN that the computer is operationally
stable and will start normally EVERY time. With this setting in place,
you will NOT be able to gain access to the F4, F5, F6, or F8 keys at
bootup. (Also, be aware that this setting, when first applied, could
possibly trigger a false alarm from an installed anti-virus software
program, depending on the anti-virus program's own settings).

RESTRICT MOUSE ON DESKTOP will prevent the use of the right mouse button
to click on the desktop (which could otherwise be used to invoke a
context menu with its dangerous set of commands) and the
Alt-double-click key-mouse combination (which could otherwise be used to
open a Properties dialog box for an icon, even if right-clicking on
icons has been defeated).

RESTRICT KEYS ON DESKTOP will disable the desktop Delete key (which
could otherwise be used for deleting desktop icons), the desktop F2 key
(which could otherwise be used to rename an icon), the desktop F3 key
(which could otherwise be used to open a Find dialog box, even if the
Start Menu's Find function has been hidden), the desktop Alt-Enter key
combination (which could otherwise be used to open a Properties dialog
box for an icon, even if right-clicking on icons has been defeated), the
desktop Shift-F10 key combination (which could otherwise be used to open
a context menu for an icon, even if right-clicking on icons has been
defeated), the "Context Menu" key on Windows 95/98 keyboards (which
could otherwise be used to open a context menu for an icon, even if
right-clicking on icons has been defeated), and the Alt-X key
combination (which could otherwise be used to "cut" an icon, in order to
move or possibly to delete it).

NO CTRL-ALT-DELETE will prevent use of the Ctrl-Alt-Delete, Alt-Tab, and
Ctrl-Esc key combinations, preventing "warm rebooting" and keyboard task
switching (though the Windows 98 Taskbar may still be used for task
switching with the mouse). CAUTION: Note that the use of this protection
setting will prevent the Close Program dialog box from appearing, so
that Ctrl-Alt-Del may NOT be used when a program "hangs" the system,
which will require that the computer be physically turned off and then
on again instead (unless rebooted from StormWindows).

NO HELP FUNCTION will disable the Windows Help function, to prevent a
guest user from reaching certain Control Panel settings through the
Windows Help files.

NO EXPLORER OR FILE MANAGER will prevent both Explorer and File manager
from running. CAUTION: Do make absolutely CERTAIN that you STILL have
some OTHER means of access to StormWindows (such as a functioning
desktop or Start Menu icon) BEFORE preventing Explorer and File Manager
from running. This is VERY important.

NO DESKTOP ICONS OR ACCESS will remove all icons from the desktop, as
well as preventing the use of the right mouse button on the desktop.
CAUTION: Do make absolutely certain that you still have some other means
of access to StormWindows (such as a functioning Start Menu icon) before
removing access to desktop icons. This is very important.

NO SAVE SPATIAL SETTINGS will prevent certain desktop changes (such as
the rearrangement of desktop icons) from being saved by the system. Note
that this setting by itself will not prevent the creation or the
deletion of desktop icons.

NO INTERNET EXPLORER ICON will hide the Internet Explorer icon.

NO MODIFYING TOOLBARS will prevent certain changes to toolbars on the
Taskbar.

Active Desktop

NO ACTIVE DESKTOP will restrict switching to Active Desktop mode.

NO ACTIVE DESKTOP ITEMS will remove all Active Desktop items from the
Desktop.

NO CHANGES TO A-D ITEMS will restrict modifying Active Desktop items.

NO ADDING A-D ITEMS will restrict the addition of new Active Desktop
items.

NO DELETING A-D ITEMS will restrict the deletion of current Active
Desktop items.

NO EDITING A-D ITEMS will restrict editing the properties of Active
Desktop items.

NO CLOSING A-D ITEMS will restrict the closing of Active Desktop items.

NO HTML WALLPAPER will restrict the use of HTML wallpaper on the Active
Desktop.

NO CHANGING A-D WALLPAPER will restrict the changing of wallpaper in
Active Desktop mode.

NO MODIFYING A-D TOOLBARS will restrict changes to Active Desktop
toolbars.

Start Menu Page

StormWindows, in its Start Menu page, allows you to restrict access to
many Windows 98 Start Menu features and commands.

CAUTION: Many of these restrictions can be dangerous if not used with
care. Consider carefully the impact of each of these Start menu
restrictions before invoking it. Do not remove any means of access to
StormWindows without first making certain that you still have other ways
of starting StormWindows. This is important.

Start Menu Settings

NO CONTROL PANEL OR PRINTERS will remove access to both the Control
Panel and the Printers folder in Start Menu Settings and in My Computer.

NO SETTINGS TASKBAR will remove access to the Taskbar Properties dialog
in Start Menu Settings.

NO SETTINGS FOLDER OPTIONS will remove access to Folder Options
properties in Start Menu Settings.

NO SETTINGS ACTIVE DESKTOP will remove access to Active Desktop commands
in Start Menu Settings.

NO SETTINGS WINDOWS UPDATE will remove access to the Windows Update
command in Start Menu Settings.

Start Menu Shut Down

NO LOG OFF COMMAND will disable access to the Log Off command on the
Start Menu.

NO SHUT DOWN COMMAND will disable access to the Shut Down command on the
Start Menu. CAUTION: Do make certain that you still have access to
StormWindows (for its access to the Shut Down command) by some means
(such as a functioning Start Menu icon) before disabling normal access
to the Shut Down command. This is very important.

Start Menu Restrictions

NO FAVORITES MENU will disable access to the Favorites Menu on the Start
Menu.

NO FIND COMMAND will disable access to the Find command on the Start
Menu. CAUTION: Do make absolutely certain that you still have some other
means of access to StormWindows (such as a functioning Start Menu icon)
before disabling normal access to the Find command. This is very
important.

Note: Even if the Start Menu Find command is hidden, Find can still be
invoked with the F3 key, so you may wish to also employ the Restrict
Mouse on Desktop command (on the Desktop page, under Shell
Restrictions).

NO RUN COMMAND will disable access to the Run command on the Start Menu.
CAUTION: Do make absolutely certain that you still have some other means
of access to StormWindows (such as a functioning Start Menu icon) before
disabling normal access to the Run command. This is very important.

NO START MENU RIGHT-CLICK will prevent modifying Start Menu items by
right-clicking with the mouse.

Start Menu Documents

NO DOCUMENTS MENU will remove access to documents through the Documents
Menu.

NO DOCUMENTS HISTORY will prevent the keeping a list of recent documents
in the Documents Menu.

CLEAR DOCUMENTS AT EXIT will empty the Documents Menu when Windows is
exited.

Programs Page

StormWindows, in its Programs page, allows you to restrict access (as
well as restoring normal access) to both entire program folders and
individual program links, whether they are present in Start Menu
Programs, in Start Menu Proper, or as desktop icons.

The current status of each individual Windows program link (those with
the ".lnk" suffix) or DOS PIF file (those with the ".pif" suffix), as
well as each program folder (those without any suffix), is displayed in
the two listboxes on each of the three property sheets on the Programs
Page.

The VISIBLE PROGRAMS listboxes will display the individual program links
and program folders that are currently accessible through Start Menu
Programs and Start Menu Proper. Note that the Startup folder in Start
Menu Programs may not be hidden, as Windows will create a new, empty
Startup folder the next time Windows is started.

The HIDDEN PROGRAMS listboxes will display the individual program links
and program folders that have been removed from Start Menu Programs and
Start Menu Proper by StormWindows.

The VISIBLE ICONS listbox will display the individual program links and
program folders that are currently available as desktop icons. Note that
Windows will not allow the My Computer system icon to be hidden without
hiding all desktop icons by using the No Desktop Icons or Access
command.

The HIDDEN ICONS listbox will display the desktop icons that have been
removed from the desktop by StormWindows.

NOTE - The Import, Export, Unprotect Now, and Reprotect Now functions do
NOT affect, NOR are affected by, the contents of the various listboxes
on the Programs Page. [Those functions only involve the checkbox (only)
settings on all the other pages.]

Hiding Programs and Icons

The HIDE command will remove a selected program from Start Menu
Programs, Start Menu Proper, or from the desktop.

CAUTION: Do make absolutely certain that you still have some other means
of access to StormWindows before removing access to any StormWindows
menu item or icon by using the Hide function on any of the Programs Page
property sheets. This is very important.

The HIDE command may be invoked by:

1. selecting a program in a Visible Programs listbox or the Visible
Icons listbox and then using the Hide command button.

2. double-clicking on any program in a Visible Programs listbox or the
Hidden Icons listbox.

NOTE - The Import, Export, Unprotect Now, and Reprotect Now functions do
NOT affect, NOR are affected by, the contents of the various listboxes
on the Programs Page. [These functions only involve the checkbox (only)
settings on all the other pages.]

Note that StormWindows will NOT allow the Startup folder in Start Menu
Programs to be hidden, because Windows will create a new, empty Startup
folder the next time Windows is started.

Note that Windows will NOT allow the My Computer system icon to be
hidden without hiding all desktop icons by using the No Desktop Icons or
Access command.

Showing Programs and Icons

The SHOW command will restore a selected hidden program to Start Menu
Programs, Start Menu Proper, or to the desktop.

The SHOW command may be invoked by:

1. selecting a program in a Hidden Programs listbox or the Hidden Icons
listbox and then using the Show command button.

2. double-clicking on any program in a Hidden Programs listbox or the
Hidden Icons listbox.

NOTE - The Import, Export, Unprotect Now, and Reprotect Now functions do
NOT affect, NOR are affected by, the contents of the various listboxes
on the Programs Page. [These functions only involve the checkbox (only)
settings on all the other pages.]

Opening Programs and Icons

The OPEN command will open an Explorer-like window to a selected program
group, or will open or execute a selected program link, on the three
property sheets of the Programs Page (whether hidden or visible).

The OPEN command may be invoked with either of the two Open command
buttons on the any one of the three property sheets of the Programs
Page.

The Open command button to the left is for programs displayed in the
Visible Programs or Icons listboxes, while the Open button to the right
is for programs in the Hidden Programs or Icons listboxes.

Note that the various desktop system icons (such as My Computer or
Recycle Bin) may not be opened from the Programs Page.

System Page

StormWindows, in its System page, allows you to restrict access to many
sensitive Windows 98 system characteristics and functions.

The System page also allows you to control to a great extent (primarily
in the area of Registry security) the amount of security afforded to
StormWindows itself.

System Control Panel

NO DEVICE MANAGER PAGE will hide the Device Manager properties from the
System option in Control Panel.

NO HARDWARE PROFILES PAGE will hide the Hardware Profiles properties
from the System option in Control Panel.

NO FILE SYSTEM BUTTON will remove the File System button in the System
Control Panel.

NO VIRTUAL MEMORY BUTTON will remove the Virtual Memory button in the
System Control Panel.

MS-DOS Access

NO MS-DOS PROMPT OR APPS will restrict access to the DOS prompt and
access to DOS programs while Windows is running.

NO EXIT TO MS-DOS MODE will prevent exiting from Windows to MS-DOS mode.

Permitted Windows Programs

The ALLOW ONLY THESE TO RUN dialog box will provide you with the ability
to prepare a list of Windows programs that will be the only ones that
Windows will allow to run. CAUTION: This command should not be invoked
without very careful consideration as to which programs will be allowed
to be run. This is very important.

The ALLOWED PROGRAMS listbox displays the filenames of the Windows
programs that will be the only programs allowed to be run if the Allow
Only These to Run checkbox is checked.

The ADD TO LIST command will invoke a common file dialog box from which
you may select a program to add to the Allowed Programs listbox.

The REMOVE FROM LIST command will remove a program's filename from the
Allowed Programs listbox. Note that you may NOT remove StormWindows from
the Allowed Programs listbox.

The CLOSE command will close the Permitted Windows Program dialog box,
returning you to the System page. Note that the Close command does NOT
cancel any changes made to the contents of the Allowed Programs listbox.

WARNING: The Allow Only These to Run command is not a command to be
invoked lightly. DO make CERTAIN that ANY program (such as an installed
anti-virus program, for example) that must be allowed to be run is
included in the Allowed Programs listbox, which therefore should be
double-checked for accuracy and completeness before the Allow Only These
to Run setting is put in place.

Registry Security

NOTE: The use of these three commands is HIGHLY recommended for
preventing guest users from attempting to circumvent StormWindows
protection measures.

NO REGISTRATION EDITOR will prevent access to the Windows 98
Registration Editor. CAUTION: Do make certain that you still have access
to StormWindows (for its own access to the Registration Editor) by some
means (such as a functioning Start Menu icon) before disabling normal
access to the Registration Editor. This is very important.

NO SYSTEM POLICY EDITOR will prevent access to the Windows 98 System
Policy Editor, whether installed on the computer's hard drive or carried
to it on a floppy diskette.

NO REGISTRY MERGING will prevent merging of .REG files into the
Registry. CAUTION: This checkbox must be UNchecked before installing any
new software, since some setup programs may utilize merging to update
the System Registry with new settings. This is very important.

Shell Folders

case-sensitive).

Open... Page

StormWindows, in its Open... page, allows you to open up various Windows

Individual Licenses

An Individual (Single-PC) License for StormWindows entitles a registered
individual (NON-institutional) user to install StormWindows on any ONE
computer that he/she personally owns, but he/she must NOT allow his/her
registered copy of the program to be installed or used on any other
computer. Furthermore, a Single-PC copy of StormWindows registered to an
individual user may be legally installed on his/her own PERSONALLY owned
computer at an institution, but that individually licensed copy of
StormWindows may NOT be installed on any other computer(s) at that
institution.

An Individual (Single-PC) License for StormWindows is intended to be
used ONLY by an individual private user on his/her own computer, and may
be purchased ONLY by an individual (NOT by an institution). Cetus
Software will NOT accept any registration order from an individual that
is to be paid for with an institutional check. A Single-PC copy of
StormWindows may be registered to an individual (NON-institutional) user
for $30.00 (diskettes $10.00 extra).

Registered Single-PC copies of StormWindows will be clearly marked to
show that a Single-PC License has been granted to one particular named
individual.

There is a registration form at the end of this document.

Site Licenses

A Single-Building Site License for StormWindows entitles the registered
institution (school building, business location, organization
headquarters, etc.) to install the program on an unlimited number of
computer(s) belonging to that institution at ONE particular specified
location, but registered copies of the program may NOT be distributed
beyond the boundaries of that particular location.

Please note that it is NOT the NUMBER of computer installations BUT it
is the intended USE of the computers at an institution that require an
institutional Site License. (An institution that intends to install
StormWindows on only one PC must still purchase a Site License.)

A Single-Building copy of StormWindows may be registered to an
institution for $120.00 (diskettes $10.00 extra). Registered
Single-Building copies of StormWindows will be clearly marked to show
that a Single-Building Site License has been granted for use at one
particular named location.

There is a registration form at the end of this document.

Corporate Licenses

A Corporate License for StormWindows entitles the registered institution
(school system, business organization, etc.) to install the program on
an UNlimited number of computer(s) belonging to that institution at an
UNlimited number of sites, but registered copies of the program may NOT
be distributed beyond the boundaries of sites belonging to that
particular institution.

A Corporate License may be obtained for multiple sites; the cost is
determined primarily by the actual number of locations to be registered.
Please contact Cetus Software for details.

Registered Corporate licensed copies of StormWindows will be clearly
marked to show that a Corporate License has been granted to one
particular named institution.
