INTRODUCTION:

Tweak Revisited is a utility for Windows 95, 98 and ME.
It is not compatible with WinNT/2000/XP.

 The premise of Tweak Revisited:
     You bought a tool (Windows).
     You use that tool.
You may as well configure it to your best advantage.

Tweak Revisited is not a collection of exotic functions for "hobby tweakers".
Rather, it simply provides access to various functions of practical value....functions
that many people may not be aware of.

As much as possible, Tweak Revisited makes these functions easy to use,
without requiring extensive knowledge on your part. But it also provides an
explanation of the functions, should you want that.

Tweak Revisited provides easy access to:

Hard-to-find information, such as driver and software versions.
Obscure settings such as default icons and Start Menu items.
Useful functions such as folder links and right-click options.
"Dignifying" functions such as cleaning advertising off of IE.

There are also several helpful tools built in:

Start Up Manager to control startup program settings.
Cookie managers for IE 4, 5 and Netscape 4.
Backup Manager to set up one-click backup of important files.
True Color Icon Editor for making icon; converts pictures to
icons, extracts icons from any file, saves in 8- or 24- bit format.
Start Menu Organizer to easily make a new, cleaned-up Start Menu.
IE QuickSet utility - allows one-click change of IE security settings.

Use the Help buttons to get a full explanation of all functions as well as
useful tips concerning their use. These small purple question-mark buttons
appear for virtually all Tweak Revisited function.

INSTALLATION:

To install, just double-click the enclosed .exe file.

If a prior version of Tweak Revisited is installed:
It should be uninstalled before proceeding. Note that Tweak Revisited uses
its program folder (usually C:\Program Files\Tweak Revisited 3) to back up
certain files when changes are made. If the un-install says it is unable to remove
all files, it will be because some of these backup files have been created. The old
TR program folder can be left with those files in it when TR v. 3.2 is installed.

Error messages:
This program is written in Visual Basic 6 and requires the VB6 'Runtime Files'.
These files may be missing on Win95 and Win98 1st edition. If the Runtime files
are not installed, when you run Tweak Revisited you'll get an error message that
MSVBVM60.DLL is missing.

There are links to get the VB6 Runtime files at the Joe'Software website:
www.jsware.net (see the Tweak Revisited page.)

In rare cases there may be an error message during setup that says something to
the effect: "unable to copy file xyz", "file not found", etc. The usual cause of this
error:
The installation moves a file setup1.exe into the Windows folder to carry out the
installation. If a setup1.exe file already exists in the Windows folder, it may not get
deleted and the wrong setup1.exe may be running. The solution: look for a file setup1.exe
in the Windows folder. Delete it. Run setup again.

CHANGES FROM v. 3.0 to v. 3.2:
(Some of these updates were incorporated into v. 3.09, available to licensed users.)
__________________________________________________

Bug fix: Startup and shutdown pictures: The Help has said that TR will adjust the picture if necessary.
That was not working. It now does. You can use any BMP or JPG file for the picture and TR
will offer to resize and/or change resolution where needed.

Bug fix: Backup Manager: There was no option to change the backup folder and the path to
Outlook Express mail was one folder too high (backing up more than necessary).
Both of those things have been corrected.

Bug fix: 24-bit icons had a black background when viewed in browsing windows. (fixed in v. 3.09)

Bug fix: The function to remove commercial logos from Internet Explorer did
                not find all settings.(fixed in v. 3.09)

Updated: Drive info in the system info. window: The figures for drive space were
not accurate over 2GB. They now are.

Major new functions:

   Start Menu Organizer -
Provides a means to make a new Start Menu from scratch. The Organizer has an easy
visual, drag-drop interface; it's designed to make easy work of cleaning the junk off
         of the Start Menu.

Internet Explorer settings and IE QuickSet utility for IE4,5 and 6-
        - Check obscure security settings that may have reduced the security level
for some URLs without your knowledge.

        - Customize the High security setting in IE to make it safer.
( Normally, the High setting is not completely safe - it allows scripting. At the same
time it blocks file downloads, making it nearly useless. TR can modify the High
security setting to block ALL script, ActiveX and cookies while allowing downloads.)
[Note: this function varies depending upon IE version - see Help.]

        - IE QuickSet - a built-in utility. IE QuickSet runs separately from TR,
providing one-click access to security level settings for any IE zone. IE QuickSet
makes it realistic to change settings quickly while browsing....something that's
been made very difficult in the design of IE.
In IE 5 and 6 a button can be installed on the toolbar for easy access to IE QuickSet.

Icon Editor updates :

Added pixel markers added around outside of editor work area.

Added different cursors to indicate what operation is currently active.

Added "tracer" line to guide drawing operations.

 NEW ICON EDITOR FUNCTIONS:

    CHANGE 1 COLOR

This function will change all pixels of a given color to the Current Color.
You just click the button, then click the color in the image that you want
        to change.
For example, if you wanted to make an icon from a GIF with transparent background:
Save the GIF as a BMP in a graphic program.
Load the BMP into the icon editor.
Set Current Color to transparent color.
Click the "Change 1 Color" button and then select a point in the editor image
that shows the GIF transparent color.
The GIF transparency will thereby be transferred to the icon.

     LOAD AND RESIZE

Click the button to browse for a BMP or JPG file. The file image will be
automatically resized to fit the editor (32 x 32) (This won't always result in
a usable picture, it depends on the size and complexity of detail in the original image.)

     TEXT TOOLBAR

Click the TEXT button to open the text toolbar. A preview box shows how the
text will look in the icon. You can adjust color, font, size, bold and italic. The
preview box will update to show the change.
The text position can also be adjusted before setting it into the icon image.

Version Info updates ("Misc." window):

Added file name to driver version list. It now shows company, filename, description and version.

Added program name to software list. It did display the path, EXE name and version of programs.
There is now an option to also list the program name as it appears on the Start Menu.

Miscellaneous new functions:

Index of functions - available from the Help menu.

List modified files - This is a minor function added to the last window. It's just
a quick and easy way to find what files have been modified in a given folder.

Folder List button ("Open with, Options" window):

This function adds a button to folder windows with the caption "Folder List".
             (requires Active Desktop)
The button can be used to show a list of all files and folders in the current folder.
The list can also show file sizes or Last Modified dates. The file list will appear in
a new window. To save the list:
Right-click - Select All - Copy; then paste into Notepad, etc.

"Open in New Window" menu for folders ("Open with, Options" window):

This provides the option to put a menu item on the right-click menu
for folders. If you select "Open folders in same window" from the Folder
Options settings you'll then be able to have it both ways:
              - Double-click a folder to open it in the same window.
              - Use the right-click menu to open a folder in a new window.
This is handy when, for example, you want to move files between two
         neighboring folders.

Stop a program ("Misc." window, "See what's running now" function):

Force a program to close on the list of programs currently running.
Unfortunately, this will not usually work for a frozen program. When
a program is frozen it's usually stalled and not receiving messages so
it can't respond to the order to quit.
