Introduction
============

Montana Software is proud to present Rescue 911, a versatile and
dependable utility to back up your most important files. If you
install new software, edit your registry, or even browse the web,
you should back up important files often.

Have you ever had your system crash on you? Have you ever had to
reformat your hard drive? Rescue 911 works to prevent those problems
from happening. Most hard-drive problems are software related; they
stem from corrupted files on your computer. Rescue 911 backs up
your registry and other system files -- manually with the touch of a
button, or automatically on system bootup. If you need to restore
your files, simply push another button. If Windows becomes corrupted
and won't start, the Rescue Diskette will boot your system into DOS
and automatically restore files from your last Automatic Backup.

Backing up the Registry
=======================

***IMPORTANT***

If you plan to edit your registry, follow these instructions for
backing it up and restoring it:

1. You must use Manual Backup. In the main Rescue window, click
the "Manual Backup" tab, then click the "Manual Backup" button.
In the next window, click "Continue." You will then see the progress
bar as the important files are being backed up.

2. Edit your registry using RegEdit or some other registry editing tool.

3. If you wish to restore your old registry, YOU MUST FIRST REBOOT
YOUR COMPUTER, then use rescue 911 to restore the registry from the
Manual Backup. In the main Rescue window, click the "Manual Backup"
tab, then click the "Restore from Manual Backup" button. In the
next window, click "Continue." You will then see the progress bar
as the system files are being restored.

4. Reboot your computer again, and you will be back to your old
registry.

If you would like to learn more about the registry, open the Rescue
Help file and read "How the Registry Works."

Why you should use Manual Backup:
All manual backups go to a separate directory from the Automatic
backups. Why? Each time you edit the registry you need to reboot
your computer for changes to take effect. If you have Automatic
Backup selected (and you should), it will replace your backed up
files with the changed files! Your manual backups will remain
unchanged during those reboots, allowing you to easily restore
your files.
