Introduction:

ReAnimator2 is a compilation of 3 handy tools to help you out if
Windows is playing tricks on you.

First, there are the backup and restoring of your configuration files.

This enables you to go back to a state when your computer ran just fine.
It makes it safe to edit your registry at will , install any new software
or just try out new things without the risk of destroying your Windows
setup. Don't worry any more about the dreaded "Registry Error" message.
You can always go back by restoring an earlier backup from Windows, or if
you really messed up things and Windows won't start, from DOS.

Second, there is the File Checker.

More than one program often uses the files stored in your Windows and
System folder. Installing new software will often overwrite one or more
of the already installed files with newer versions. In some rare cases,
however, when older versions replace newer versions, this could lead to
unexpected behavior of programs that use these files. It may even stop
the execution of the programs or cause the program to 'hang'.

With the File Checker, you can monitor your Windows and System folder for
any changes. It will report to you if any file has been added, deleted or
changed. Now you can see what another program setup really did!
Right clicking a file lets you create a fast backup or tries
to extract the file from a cabinet
file.

Third, there is the Cab file extractor.

Microsoft usually uses cab files to distribute their programs or
operating systems. These are compressed files, and the files within are
hard to access. You could, of course, use CabView but finding a specific
file, if you don't know in what cab file it is, could literally take
forever.
With the ReAnimator2 Cab file extractor, however, you can specify a file
you would like to extract from a cabinet file.
Specify the location of the cab files (e.g. your Windows CD) and
ReAnimator2 will search all cab files. If the file is found, ReAnimator2
will extract it to the Extract folder. To extract afile from a cab file,
one Cab File, using the Evaluation version, will only be scanned at a time.
The full version will scan all available cab files at once.

For details on backup and restoring, the file checker, and the cab file
extractor, please see the Help File that comes with the ReAnimator2
program.

Installing:

This is the hardest part . . . and it's really not hard at all!

Extract reanim2.zip and select install (from WinZip) or extract to a
temporary folder with PKZip and double click "setup.exe" file (without
quote marks). You can select ReAnimator2 to install in any directory.
That's it!

ReAnimator2 was programmed in Visual Basic 5.0.

Visual Basic programs, like ReAnimator2, are not "stand alone" programs.
Like ReAnimator2, they need the Visual Basic runtime files to work. If
you don't know if you have these files, then just try to run ReAnimator2
after Setup. If a message appears about a missing ".dll" you must
download the VB5 runtime files from any major shareware site, e.g.,
www.microsoft.com, or from my ReAnimator2 website at:
http://www.horizon.nl/~rvosta.

Uninstalling:

To uninstall ReAnimator2 open the control panel and go to Add /
Remove Programs. Select "ReAnimator 2" from the list and click the "Add
/ Remove" button.

Some of the files were not installed by the setup program and they have
to be removed manually, but the ReAnimator2 Uninstall will again notify
you of this fact at that time.

Select and delete the following files and folder:

In the root directory of your "Boot" drive (usually C:\) , remove the
files: "Reanim2.exe" and "Reanim2.ini" (without the quotes).
Now delete the folder where you installed ReAnimator2 (This will delete
all backups and configuration files that ReAnimator2 created).
ReAnimator2 uninstallation is now complete.

Backup:

ReAnimator2 can be found within the "Start Menu" listings under "Programs"
or you can create a shortcut for your desktop in the usual way. You can
create a new backup in two ways:

1. The manual way:

Select a backup slot using the scroll bar at the bottom. Press
"Backup to #"' (Where # is the backup of your choice)

2. The automatic way:

Press "Backup to Oldest." This will automatically select the
backup that holds the less recent backup.
If any backup is found to be empty, this one will be selected instead.

If you have selected the "Add Remarks" option in "Preferences," a
window will pop up where you can add a comment to your backup.
This will help you pick the correct backup if you have to restore your
configuration files.

Restore:

1. Restoring a backup Configuration from Windows:

Note: Before restoring, you should close all open applications that are
running and save your work, because a reboot of your system will be
required after ReAnimator2 has finished restoring. Please keep in mind
that all changes made to your configuration files after the creation of
the backup you want to restore, will be lost when restoring. This is, of
course, a good thing to do if you want to get rid of all the entries a
setup program made, which caused your Windows problems in the first
place.

Restoring a Configuration is as easy as creating a backup:

Select the slot you want to restore by comparing the creation
date and time or by the remark you added and press "Restore Backup #" or,
press "Restore Last Made" to automatically select your most recent backup
for restoring. When ReAnimator2 has finished restoring it will prompt you
to click "OK." This will restart your computer.

2. Restoring a backup from DOS:

In some cases when Windows is really messed up, you will not be
able to start Windows. Don't worry - - you'll be just fine in a moment.
It just takes about 2 minutes longer than through Windows. In this case,
restart your computer and repeat pressing F8 until you see the Windows
startup menu (it's in DOS mode). From this menu select "Command Prompt
in save mode" and press enter. At the DOS Command Prompt (usually c:\)
type: reanim2 and press enter. A blue screen will pop up with all
available backups. Just type the number of the Backup you would like to
restore and press enter. Press Y if you want to restore this backup N to
abort. When prompted press the keyboard CTRL + ALT + DELETE buttons (in
that order, and keep each button PRESSED) to restart your computer (THEN
LET GO OF THOSE BUTTONS). And, voila, things should be back to normal
now.

Troubleshooting:

If you get a message from Windows like this:

"Could not find (filename). File is missing or is not correctly
registered," then open the Windows/System folder and copy Regsvr32.exe
to: the Windows/SendTo folder. Now, right click the file that gave the
error message and select the Regsvr32.exe from the menu. The file will
now be entered in the registry.

It is possible that a file you are trying to copy is in use by Windows.
If this happens you will get an error and ReAnimator2 cannot restore this
file from within Windows. Close all programs and reboot in "Dos prompt
only" by holding down F8 during startup. Now copy the file to the
correct directory.
