Joan is participating in a debate with Ann over the issue of a special, exclusive women's center on a university campus. Joan has been speaking for about thirty minutes and this is the end of her speech.

Joan: "It is clear that there is a need for an exclusive center devoted solely to the needs of women. As we all know, women have been deprived of basic liberties for untold centuries and excluded from clubs and such. This exclusive women's center is a step in the direction of liberty and tolerance. When women know they have a place all of their own, free from outsiders, they will feel a part of the American society as a whole.

As you know, Ann will be speaking after me. She will come up here, where I now stand, and tell you that the center will be expensive. She will tell you that this exclusive center is the wrong thing to do. She will say that women shouldn't have their own exclusive area. However, you must know the following about Ann. Many of you do not know that Ann is a member of the Young Republicans and that she is a traitor to the feminist movement. Oh sure, she claims to be a feminist, but we all know she serves the cause of sexism! So, you should doubt all that she has to say! ...I see I've gone over my time limit a bit, but it is not like Ann has anything important to say. I now turn the podium over to Ann."Ad HominemPoisoning the WellCircumstantial Ad HominemAd Hominem Tu QuoqueAd Hominem: This is a wrong answer. While Joan is attacking Ann, she is attacking Ann before Ann even makes a claim. Hence, Poisoning the Well is a better answer.Poisoning the Well: This is the right answer. Joan is attempting to discredit, in advance, what Ann might say. Joan does not even give Ann the chance to make her case before she launches her attack.Circumstantial Ad Hominem: This is a wrong answer. While Joan is launching an attack on Ann, this attack is not aimed against a particular claim Ann has made. Joan is attempting to discredit, in advance, what Ann might say.Ad Hominem Tu Quoque: This is a wrong answer. Joan is not attempting to "argue" that a claim is false because it is inconsistent with something else a person has said or what a person has said is inconsistent with her actions.Joan is clearly attacking Ann, but at what time is the attack occurring?2
