What is DjVuer?

---------------

DjVuer is an image tool, the primary function of which is to convert scanned

images to a new image file format called DjVu. The DjVu format is ideal for

images with text on top of a photographic background, images that are

composites of text and photos, or any other types of images that combine

text or drawings with photos. The format is also an excellent choice for

black and white documents, such as scans of paper forms, faxes, technical

drawings, etc.

A second brand new image file format, IW44, is also supported by DjVuer.

IW44 is a wavelet based encoding scheme that does a very good job on

photographic images, with state-of-the-art compression techniques. In fact,

the 'background' portion (as opposed to the high contrast, usually text,

portions) of a DjVu image is actually encoded using the IW44 scheme.

Source images can be imported into DjVuer directly from a TWAIN scanner,

or loaded from common file formats such as JPEG files and Windows bitmap

files. These images can then be converted and saved as DjVu or IW44 image

files. The quality of the new image file can be manipulated, using options

that affect the high contrast portions ('text', for DjVu images) and the

background (the rest of the image) in different ways, giving the advanced

user a lot of control over the encoding procedure.

Although the program is mainly designed to be a converter, it is also a

viewer. In addition to DjVu and IW44 images, a few other popular image file

formats are supported as well.

Introducing DjVu - a new image file format

------------------------------------------

DjVuer is an image conversion tool that lets the user convert images to

the DjVu image file format. DjVu is a new file format that was developed

by AT&T Labs, and offers two very attractive features for high resolution

scanned images:

Ability to separate high contrast portions, such as text, from

	the rest of the image.

Very high compression ratio, often five to ten times better than

	JPEG for 24-bit images.

The ability to separate text from a background makes DjVu an ideal format

for scanned images of source material that combines text and graphics.

(It is also good for black and white documents, with file sizes typically

25-30% smaller than TIFF files using Group 4 compression.) The advantages

of the higher compression ratios offered by the DjVu file format are

obvious: Less storage space, less download time for images on the

Internet, etc.

The combined effect of these features produces a small image (in bytes)

with very readable text. The background (the original image minus the high

contrast portions) can be compressed a lot, without sacrificing the

quality of the text, since the text is typically part of the high contrast

portions that are stored at higher quality. This makes the format ideal

for scanned images of e.g. catalogs, magazine covers, etc.

How to install DjVuer

---------------------

To install the DjVuer, run the self extracting archive DjVuerin.exe. This

will automatically decompress the installation disks and start the

installation program. Once inside the installation program, follow the

instructions. The installation is relatively simple, and accepting the

default settings should be adequate for most users.

This demo is freely distributable as long as no charge is made for the

re-distribution.

How to register and get more license counts for DjVuer

------------------------------------------------------

This copy of DjVuer is fully functional, but only licensed for the

equivalent of conversions of 50 color DjVu images, 100 black and white

DjVu images, or 100 IW44 images. The 'license count' will be reduced

by one or two units every time there is an image that is saved as a DjVu

or IW44 file. The user will not be able to save to DjVu or IW44 formats

when the count has reached zero.

More licenses for DjVu and IW44 conversions can be purchased at any time

via the internet. Simply follow the instructions under 'How to...Get new

DjVu licenses' in the help file. (If there are any problems with this

or anything else regarding DjVuer, contact us at the address listed at the

end of this document.
