PLAYING A TAPE

1. Gently pull open the cassette compartment lid.

2. Insert a cassette into the compartment with the open edge of the
cassette facing up and the full reel of the tape on the right. Close
    the cassette compartment lid.

3. Press the counter reset button to set the counter to 000. Plug
    in your earphone.

4. Press the [PLAY] button.

5. Adjust the VOLUME control to a comfortable listening level.

6. Set the TONE/VOX switch to the appropriate position -- HIGH or LOW>
Use the HIGH position to emphasize the treble response. Use the LOW
position to enhance the bass (for Metal/CrO2 Hi-Bias tape, use the LOW
position for a more natural sound).

7.. To stop the tape, press [STOP].

USING THE TAPE COUNTER

You can use the tape counter to give you an indication of the position of
the tape. Before starting to play, press the reset button to set the
numbers to 000. When the recorder plays, the numbers will increase. The
incremented numbers represent the amount of tape that has moved past the
tape heads since the tape motion began. In the rewind mode, the numbers
decrease.

USING PAUSE

To momentarily stop the current function (play or record), slid PAUSE to
IN. When you slide PAUSE to OUT, the current function resumes.

USING FAST-F/CUE

To rapidly advance the tape, press [FAST-F/CUE]. The botton locks, and
the tape continues to the end or until you press [STOP].

Press [FAST-F/CUE] while the tpae is playing to locate a specific portion
of the tape. The high-speed playback sound can help you locate the
desired position.

NOTE: The automatic shut-off mechanism does not function in the mode.
Press [STOP] as soon as the unit reaches the end of the tape.

USING REWIND/REVIEW

To rewind the tape, press [REWIND/REVIEW]. The button locks, and the tape
rewinds to the beginning or until you press [STOP].

If you press [REWIND/REVIEW] while the tape is playing, you hear a high-
speed playback sound to helpyou locate a specific portion of the tape.

NOTE: The automatic shut-off mechanism does not function in this mode.
As soon as rewind is complete, press [STOP].

REC/BATT INDICATOR

The REC/BATT indicator serves two functions. When you press [PLAY],
[REWIND/REVIEW], or [FAST-F/CUE], if the indicator becomes dim, it is time
to replace the batteries. In the record mode, it flickers to show that
recording is in progress.

RECORDING

USING THE TONE/VOX SWITCH

In the record mode, place the TONE/VOX switch in the IN position for the
voice actuation mode. When the TONE/VOX switch is in the OUT position,
recording cannot be activated by the sound of a voice.

USING VOICE ACTUATION

Recording starts when the microphone receives a signal (voice or other
sound). It temporarily stops recording when the signal ceases. For voice
actuation to work, you must use the record button in conjuction with the
TONE/VOX switch. The VOLUME control also influences this operation.

1. Insert a blank cassette.

2. Set the TONE/VOX switch to IN.

3. Set the VOLUME control as needed. At the MAX position (10), a soft
sound can turn on the recorder. At the MIN position (0), voice
actuation requires a louder sound to start recorder. A little
experimenting will show you the best setting for the VOLUME control
    for your recording environment.

You can check/monitor the recording condition using the supplied
earphone. It helps you adjust the VOLUME control.

4. Press teh [RECORD] button. Recording does not begin until the sound
of a voice activates the mechanism. The ALC (Automatic Level Control)
circuit automatically sets the recording level.

5. Recording stops when the voice stops. Or, you can manually press
[STOP] if you wish to stop recording while the voice continues.

MANUAL RECORDING

Place the TONE/VOX switch in the OUT position. Then, you can manually
operate the controls. For best recorded quality, place the recorder a
foot or so away from the person or persons speaking. However, because the
microphone is so sensitive, it will pick up a voice or group of voices
from a distance of several feet.

Recording with an External Microphone

Connect an external micorphone (not provided) to the recorder's MIC jack.
When the external microphone is connected, the built-in microphone is
automatically disconnected. If the microphone you are using has an ON/OFF
switch for remote control, connect your microphone to the REM and MIC
jacks. Then you can turn the recorder on and off with the switch on the
microphone.

Set the TONE/VOX switch to the IN position (if you wish to use voice
actuation) and proceed with recording. Set the switch to OUT if someone
is manually operating the [RECORD] button.

Recording from External Sources

You can record directly from a tuner, a radio or a TV. Use a dubbing
patch cord such as Radio Shack's patch cord (Cat. No. 42-2152) to connect
the MIC jack on your recorder to the headphone output jack of an external
tuner, radio, or other component. Set the TONE/VOX switch to OUT, and
then proceed with recording.

USING THE EARPHONE

You can use the supplied earphone to listen privately to recorded sound or
to monitor ongoing results during a recording session. Insert the
earphone's 1/8-inch plug into the EAR jack. this automatically
disconnects the internal speaker. You can also connect an external or
pillow-type speaker to this jack. Always turns the volume to minimum
before placing the earphone in your ear. Then you can adjust volume to a
comfortable listening level.

ERASING A RECORDING

If you want to erase an entire cassette, or only a portion of a recording,
insert the special dummy plug (provided) into the MIC jack. Then, operate
the Minisette-20 as though you were recording (with TONE/VOX set to OUT).
As the tape moves, it is erased. No sound is picked up when using this
dummy plug. Use the tape counter to be sure you erase the right portion.
