160 MB SCSI Tape Cartridge (250-4166A) Install Faxback Doc. # 4997

BEFORE YOU BEGIN

CAUTION: Static electricity can damage electronic components. To prevent
discharge of static electricity into your computer equipment, touch a
grounded metal object before touching the drive or computer.

Before you begin, be sure your kit contains the tape drive, four rubber
grommets, four shoulder screws, the SY-TOS tape operating system diskettes,
and its manual.

INSTALLATION

The host adapter board can block access to the drive tower mounting screws.
Install the tape drive (and any other internal SCSI drive) before you
install the host adapter board.

NOTE: You might need to remove other installed adapter boards that block
access to the drive tower screws.

INSTALLING THE TAPE DRIVE

This manual assumes that you are installing the tape drive inside a computer
that has an internal SCSI hard disk drive and at least one floppy diskette
drive. (External installations of this drive will vary. See the instructions
that come with your external drive kit.)

The procedure for installing the tape drive depends on whether your computer
has a Type A, Type B, or Type C chassis. Remove the computer cover as
illustrated in your computer's user's guide. Then, compare your computer to
the following illustrations to determine the chassis type.

INSTALLATION IN A TYPE A CHASSIS

To install the tape drive in a Type A chassis, slide the unit into the
5 1/4" drive bay and secure it with the supplied mounting screws, as shown.

NOTE: You can only install one 5 1/4" device in a Type A chassis.

INSTALLATION IN A TYPE B CHASSIS

Install the tape drive in the unused 5 1/4" drive bay

1. Remove the appropriate drive rails (upper or lower set) from the drive
   tower.

2. Using the four machine screws supplied with the computer, attach the
drive rails and metal grounding clips to the tape drive as shown.

3. Slide the tape drive into the drive bay until the rails lock into place.

INSTALLATION IN A TYPE C CHASSIS

There are two 5 1/4" drive bays in a Type C chassis. If you want to install
the tape drive in the bottom 5 1/4" drive bay, you must remove the drive
tower. (Removing the drive tower is not necessary for mounting the tape
drive in the upper 5 1/4" drive bay.)

Before installing the tape drive in a Type C chassis, not the location of
any cables attached to the existing drives and disconnect the cables.

Type C, Lower 5 1/4" Drive--Follow these steps to install the tape drive in
the lower drive bay.

1. Detach the backup battery from the side of the drive tower.

2. Remove the four screws that secure the tower to the bottom of the
computer chassis and the three screws that secure the tower to the front
   of the chassis.

NOTE: Some computers with this type of drive tower do not have a front cover
opening for the lower bay. In such computers, you must mount the tape drive
in the upper bay.

CAUTIONS:

* The computer chassis' sharp edges can damage furniture and snag clothing.

* Be careful not to let the computer fall while you remove the bottom
  screws.

3. Carefully lift the drive tower up and out of the chassis.

4. Attach two shock isolators to each side of the tape drive.

5. Slide the tape drive into the lower 5 1/4" drive bay. Do not let the
tape drive touch any device installed in the upper drive bay.

6. Use the four supplied machine screws to fasten the unit to the drive
tower. (Install one of the rubber washers on each screw before you
insert it into the drive tower.)

7. Re-install the drive tower. Be sure that no cables are under the drive
tower when you replace it. Re-attach the backup battery to the
hook-and-loop strip on the side of the drive tower. (Velcro)

8. Reconnect any cables you removed from the existing drives.

Type C, Upper 5 1/4" Drive--Follow these steps to install the tape drive in
the upper drive bay.

1. Insert the four grommets that come with the Tape Cassette System into the
mounting holes in the upper 5 1/4" drive bay.

2. Slide the tape drive into the upper drive bay. Be sure it does not touch
any other installed devices. Use the four supplied machine screws to
fasten the unit to the drive tower.

3. Reconnect any cables you removed from the existing drives.

INSTALLING THE HOST ADAPTER BOARD

After you install the tape drive in a drive bay, install the host adapter
board and set its jumpers for proper operation.

Refer to the instructions supplied with the host adapter board for more
information.

Select an empty, full-size option slot to install the board. It is usually
necessary to install the board in the option slot closest to the drive tower
so the data cable can reach it easily.

CONNECTIONS

The following steps describe how to connect the data and power cables to the
tape drive.

1. Connect the single-connector end of the data cable to connector J2 on the
host adapter board. Be sure to align the arrow on the cable with Pin 1 on
   the connector.

2. Attach the two-connector end of the data cable to the tape drive.

NOTE: If you need to route the data cable between two boards, fold the cable
so its flat side is parallel to the board width. Fold the cable again at the
top of the board.

3. Connect an unused 4-pin power cable to the tape drive.

4. Reinstall the computer's cover.
