2500 XL (250-4074) Floppy Installation Faxback Doc. # 1149 INSTALLING AN EXPANSION ADAPTER Refer to "Opening the Computer" if you need instructions to open the unit. To install an expansion adapter, follow these steps: 1. Remove the screw from the expansion slot cover at the back of the computer. 2. Slide the metal slot cover out of an expansion slot. 3. With the mounting bracket at the back of the unit, carefully align and press the expansion adapter into the expansion slot and the expansion adapter guide. Be sure the expansion adapter is fully seated. 4. After the expansion adapter is fully seated, secure it with the screw you removed in Step 1. 5. Run the Setup utility, if necessary, to complete the installation. See "Setup" in the "Utilities" section for more information. INSTALLING ADDITIONAL DRIVES Your computer supports up to four storage devices. Three devices can be installed in drive bays, and a fourth can be installed in the expansion adapter area. The two upper bays support low-profile (maximum height, 1") 3 1/2" devices. The third bay supports either a half-height 5 1/4" device or a standard 3 1/2" device. A standard 3 1/2" device can be installed in the expansion adapter area. Installing a drive in the adapter area reduces the number of available adapter slots by one. To expand your storage capacity, you can install devices as listed below: * Install high-capacity or standard-capacity diskette drives in the 3 1/2" and/or 5 1/4" drive bays. The diskette drive connector in your computer supports up to two diskette drives. * Install internal hard drives in the 3 1/2" bay, the 5 1/4" drive bay, or the expansion adapter area. The SmartDrive (IDE hard drive) connector in your computer supports up to two internal hard drives. * Install disk or tape cartridge systems in the 3 1/2" or 5 1/4" drive bay. NOTE: A standard-capacity diskette drive may not be able to read a standard-density diskette that was formatted or written to in a high-capacity drive. Refer to "Diskette Types" in the "Getting Started" section for more information. Plastic panels cover the openings of the 3 1/2" and 5 1/4" drive bays. Before installing a diskette drive, remove the appropriate panel as illustrated: * To remove the 3 1/2" panel, press down on the center tab from inside the cover. This panel is replaceable. * To remove the 5 1/4" panel, press down on the panel from outside the cover. The 5 1/4" panel is not replaceable. If you are installing a hard drive that is not a SmartDrive (IDE), you will need to install an expansion adapter for the drive. Refer to the drive and adapter documentation for instructions. Be sure to follow the instructions in the installation guide included with the drive you are installing. Some installations require additional mounting hardware. For example, you need to purchase a 3 1/2" to 5 1/4" disk drive adapter to install a 3 1/2" drive in the 5 1/4" bay. Mounting hardware is available at Radio Shack stores. INSTALLING A 3 1/2" DISKETTE DRIVE Use the following procedure to install a 3 1/2" diskette drive. Refer to the diskette drive installation guide for instructions on adjusting drive components, connecting the drive cable, and selecting mounting holes on the drive. 1. Adjust switches, jumpers, and/or terminating resistors on the diskette drive, if necessary. 2. Open the computer to gain access to the 3 1/2" drive bay. Refer to "Opening the Computer" for details. 3. Select the appropriate mounting holes on the diskette drive. 4. Slide the drive into the 3 1/2" drive bay. With the drive resting on the center rail, align the mounting holes on the side of the drive with the two mounting holes on the side of the carriage. 5. Mount the diskette drive in the bay by installing the four screws as illustrated. Remove the plastic card from the 5 1/4" bay. You will need to insert the screwdriver through the hole in the 5 1/4" bay to install one of the bottom screws. Remove the panel from the computer cover. The diskette drive will extend approximately 1/2" from the bay after installation. 6. Loosen the diskette drive cable connector from the cable attached to the factory-installed diskette drive. Pin 1 of the connector is labeled. Align Pin 1 of the cable connector with Pin 1 of the drive connector on the back of the diskette drive. Then, attach the cable connector to the drive connector. 7. Run the Setup utility to complete the installation. Refer to "Setup" in the "Utilities" section for more information. INSTALLING A 5 1/4" DRIVE 1. Adjust any switches and terminating resistors on the drive as necessary. See the drive installation guide for more information. 2. Open the computer to gain access to the 5 1/4" drive bay in the carriage. Refer to "Opening the Computer" for instructions. 3. If you are installing a diskette drive, remove the plastic card from the bottom of the 5 1/4" bay and remove the panel from the computer cover. 4. Select the appropriate mounting holes for the drive. Refer to your drive installation guide. 5. Slide the drive into the bay. Align the appropriate mounting holes in the drive with the three mounting holes on the bottom of the carriage. 6. Mount the drive in the bottom of the carriage, using the screws included in your drive kit. 7. Connect the drive cable to the appropriate connector on the main logic board. Connect one of the power cables from the computer power supply to the drive, if directed to do so in the drive installation guide. INSTALLING A 3 1/2" DRIVE IN THE 5 1/4" BAY 1. Configure the drive by adjusting any jumpers or terminating resistors as directed in the drive installation guide. 2. Open the computer to gain access to the 5 1/4" bay. 3. Install the drive in a 3 1/2" to 5 1/4" internal disk drive adapter (25-1076). Attach the drive cable to the device as directed. 4. Align the holes on the wider side of the L-bracket with the bottom set of holes on the drive adapter. Install the screws as illustrated: 5. Insert the drive, adapter, and L-bracket into the 5 1/4" bay. Use the three screws from the installation kit to mount the device as illustrated: 6. Attach the remaining cable connector to the diskette drive connector or the SmartDrive connector on the main logic board. 60 MG Tape Backup (25-4079) with the 2500 XL (25-4074) or 4016 SX (25-4901) There is a bracket available for mounting the 70 mg Tape Backup (25-4079) into a 2500 XL and a 4016 SX. The bracket is available through National Parts under part number MB-0136. When placing an order, National Parts requires a catalog number as well as the part number. To place an order they will need to be given the catalog number of the computer (i.e. 25-4074 or 25-4901) as well as the part number (MB-0136).
