Speeding Up Your CD-ROM Drive

You can now speed up your CD-ROM drive in much the same way you have been
accelerating your hard drive for years, by using a cache. A cache program
stores information that has been previously read and makes it much easier
to access the next time it is needed.

The same is true for the CD and there are several programs on the market
that will accomplish this. With the release of DOS 6.2, the built in
program SMARTDRIVE can cache CD-ROM drives, but there is a secret to using
the program correctly. The line in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file containing
SMARTDRV must be AFTER the line with the CD-ROM driver MSCDEX.

If you have any questions about this procedure, please post a note in the
appropriate topic or forum area. Be sure to include your DOS version and
your model number (i.e., 2155-G82).
