Congratulations on the purchase of your new ComCentral
personal fax and voice answering system from IBM.
ComCentral is a stand-alone PC peripheral designed to meet
your personal voice and fax messaging needs by combining the
power of the personal computer with the convenience of
ordinary telephone answering and fax machines.

ComCentral:
- Receives faxes into its internal memory while your PC is
not powered on or even connected!
- Notifies you via phone call or pager that new faxes or
voice messages have been received. You can set minimum
notification intervals to avoid being called or paged too
  frequently.
- Transfers calls automatically to another number (requires
3-way conference calling from your local phone service
  provider).
- Receives faxes and voice mail while you are away from the
office. Faxes can be remotely retrieved either "on-line"
from your portable PC or forwarded to another fax machine.
- Lets you quickly review important messages while saving
and deleting others using the front panel buttons and LCD.
- Accommodates 1 or 2 phone lines, with separate greetings
  per line if desired.
- Ensures privacy of sensitive documents by electronically
storing incoming faxes in ComCentral's memory with
  password protection.
- Provides one phone number access to voice and fax messages
  for your clients.
- Sends faxes after hours when phone rates are lower and
phone lines are available, with your PC powered off!

Important Information you should know about your ComCentral
unit:

IMPORTANT NOTE:
The ComCentral Setup utility provides you the capability to
change settings of the unit. Note that the software runs in
the PC and does not communicate changes you want to make
until you click on the CONFIGURE button. You must click on
this button any time you make a change. If you do not, and
you leave a screen or exit the program, you will lose your
changes.

INSTALLATION/RUNNING SOFTWARE:
If you are running Windows 3.1 in a standard mode (windows
is started with a WIN /s command) then you must run SHARE
from your AUTOEXEC.BAT file to allow the ComCentral software
to start properly. If SHARE is not already in your
AUTOEXEC.BAT file, add it towards the end. ComCentral
installation installs VSHARE.386 which provides for windows
file sharing, but this is not activated if you run windows
in standard mode.

Before you begin installation, make sure NO OTHER PROGRAMS
ARE RUNNING (including toolbars, see next paragraph on how
to close a running toolbar).

If you see the message "The OLE file COMPOBJ is locked and
cannot be updated," you probably have another application
running which has this file locked. ComCentral installation
needs to update this file, so the running application(s)
will have to be closed. You may see this message under
Windows 3.1 or 3.11 if the Microsoft Office toolbar or the
Lotus Smartsuite toolbar is running. Many systems are setup
to start these programs on Windows startup. You will need
to close the toolbars and redo the installation. There are
several ways to close the toolbars:
  - Close the application via its pull down menu
  - Remove the application from the startup folder and
reboot your system (in this case you will have to put
the application back in startup after ComCentral
installation if you want to have the toolbar
    automatically start when windows starts).
  - Activate the windows Task List (simultaneously press
the Control and Esc keys), select a program, click on
End Task. Do not end any task until you are sure you
have saved any data you may have been working with for
    that task.
Sometimes you will get this message (or a similar message)
even when nothing else is running. This usually occurs when
a previously running program has not shut down properly.
You can try rebooting windows and retrying the ComCentral
installation.

On some machines, the Installation Progress Indicator does
not update correctly. This usually does not indicate a
problem with the installation of the ComCentral files.

If you have Lotus Smartsuite loaded, you may run into
problems with the text in ComCentral showing up as symbols
instead of alphanumeric characters. If this is the case,
you will need to delete the "Monotype Sorts" font. In
Windows 95, this is accessed by selecting "Start", "Control
Panel," "Fonts." Select the "Monotype Sorts" font, depress
the "Delete" key on the keyboard, answer "Yes" to confirm
the deletion. The text should now be properly displayed in
the ComCentral software.

After ComCentral installation, you must reboot windows
before you can execute any of the ComCentral software.

The time on the ComCentral unit is automatically set when
the ComCentral software makes a successful connection to the
ComCentral unit. You don't need to do anything other than
start the software.

INF FILE
If you have ComCentral connected to your PC and you have
Windows 95 loaded on your machine, ComCentral may be
detected upon Windows startup. You will see the "New
Hardware Found" screen:
  - Select the option "Select from a list of alternate
    drivers" and click on OK
  - For ComCentral 33.6, select the manufacturer IBM, and
    model IBM 7852-010
  - For ComCentral, select the manufacturer Rockwell, and
    the model 14400bps Data/Fax Modem

SECURITY CODE:
Your default security code is 0000. You can change it using
the ComCentral Setup program.

If you forget your security code, you will need to do a
reset using the ComCentral Setup Utility. Select Setup from
the main menus, then Reset ComCentral. Note that this will
erase everything in the unit, including all your fax and
voice messages and configuration information. After a
reset, your security code will be 0000. After a reset, the
current screen you are on will not be updated until you
leave that screen and come back. Note that after a reset,
not everything is disabled. There is a default
configuration that is loaded.

FAXING:
Faxes are received and sent using your PC fax application
software. This utility is not required to perform these
basic fax functions. To transfer a fax to your PC that has
been received into ComCentral's memory, simply start your
fax application and ensure it is setup to receive a fax.
Faxes will be transferred to the PC one at a time. You can
vew them on your PC using your PC fax application.

ComCentral recognizes Class 2 fax commands only. If you are
using a fax application already installed on your system,
ensure your "modem setup" is for Class 2 fax. ComCentral
does not work with Class 1 or 2.0 fax commands.

ComCentral is not a multitasking device. If ComCentral is
busy receiving or sending a fax, you cannot use this utility
until the operation is completed.

UARTs
If you are experiencing errors communicating with
ComCentral, you may need to select a slower serial port
speed. You can do this using the Communications Port Setup
accessed in the ComCentral Setup: Setup pulldown menu. If
your system does not have a 16550 or equivalent UART it is
recommended that your baud rate be set at 19200 bps or less.
